Financial stability and prosperity is but one component of Fonkoze’s programming as we empower Haitians to pull themselves out of poverty. Fonkoze is committed to supporting the overall well-being of our members, their families and their communities.
Thanks to generous support from several donors, Fonkoze provided a three-day summer camp experience for 2,578 children in the Central Plateau of Haiti.
Community members welcomed the camp with unmitigated warmth; many said that they had never experienced anything like it. The challenges that our members face often preclude “fun for the sake of fun.” Thus, even in the pursuit of broader objectives, we never sacrificed our primary goal of having fun.
The camps also serve to reinforce the messaging that campers’ mothers receive through Fonkoze’s Chemen Lavi Miyò program (“the pathway to a better life”) while building community cohesion; emphasizing the importance of education prior to the start of the school year; and providing role models for children and youth.
The interest and enthusiasm for the camps was infectious. We expected 2,300 children but 2,578 showed up; Fonkoze’s staff once again demonstrated their flexibility by accommodating the additional 200+ children. The camp was held at six different sites in the communities where CLM members live. Apart from learning, eating and playing together, children received school books, notebooks, pens and pencils for the upcoming school year. On the last day, every child also received a small plant to take home, an extension of camp environmental activities and a tangible reminder of a fun few days!
