Celebrating Haitian Culture in Rockport, Maine
October 2024, Rockport, Maine, came alive with the vibrant colors, rhythms, and flavors of Haiti as we hosted a series of cultural events aimed at sharing the richness of Haitian heritage with our community. From a Haitian children’s book reading and musical rara around Barnswallow Books in Rockport, to a captivating film screening at Pascal Hall, these events highlighted the resilience and creativity of Haitian culture while fostering connections and understanding.
Haitian Cultural Children’s Book Reading and Rara Experience
Our journey began with a delightful children’s book reading teaching children about Haitian musical instruments and the Kreyol words for them. Local families gathered to experience the music that reflects the beauty and struggles of Haiti, encouraging the next generation to embrace and appreciate Haiti’s cultural roots.
In addition to the reading, we introduced the lively sounds of rara—a traditional Haitian festival music. The joyful melodies and rhythms filled the air, allowing children and adults alike to immerse themselves in this unique cultural expression. This event not only fostered a sense of community but also sparked curiosity about Haiti’s rich traditions.
Film Screening of “Kite Zo A”
The highlight of our cultural celebration was the screening of the critically acclaimed film “Kite Zo A.” Attendees were transported to the heart of Haiti through its compelling storytelling and beautiful cinematography. Following the film, we hosted a producer Q&A with Zach Niles, who provided insights into the filmmaking process and the importance of sharing Haitian stories.
Steven Werlin from the Fonkoze Foundation in Haiti was presented an opening talk about the CLM program where women on the fringes of rural Haitian society complete a graduation approach program that empowers them with access and training to lift themselves out of poverty.
The evening was further enriched by a post-event reception featuring culinary delights prepared by celebrity Chef Alain Lemaire, who introduced guests to the authentic flavors of Haitian cuisine. The event also showcased traditional Haitian music performed by members of Lakou Mizik, including the talented Tipiti, Nadine Niles and Steeve Valcourt, who brought the spirit of Haiti to Rockport.
Community Engagement and Support for Fonkoze
These events not only celebrated Haitian culture but also served as a platform to raise awareness and support for Fonkoze, an organization dedicated to walking alongside Haitians as they work to build better lives for themselves and their families. Through programs that remove barriers and foster opportunities, Fonkoze empowers communities to thrive.
The enthusiastic participation from the Rockport community is a testament to the shared values of solidarity and support that unite us. We are grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to making these events a success.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on these beautiful cultural experiences, we look forward to more opportunities to celebrate and uplift Haitian heritage in Rockport and beyond. Thank you for joining us on this journey, and stay tuned for future events that honor the spirit and resilience of Haiti!
