Bringing Haiti to Skoll Week in Oxford in April

Haiti Beyond the Playbook: What It Really Takes to Work in Fragile Contexts

On April 21 in Oxford, a different kind of conversation is taking place—

This session at The Sidebar during Skoll Week brings together leaders who have spent years navigating uncertainty, adapting in real time, and making difficult decisions in one of the most complex operating environments in the world.

Too often, Haiti is left out of global development conversations—seen as too fragile, too complicated, or too challenging to engage. But those who work closest to the realities on the ground know something different: Haiti is also a place of resilience, innovation, and hard-earned insight into what it takes to sustain impact when conditions are constantly shifting.

This session creates space for an honest and transparent dialogue.

Leaders from Fonkoze, Anseye Pou Ayiti, and the Haiti Development Institute will share firsthand accounts of what it means to adapt programs under pressure—including the difficult decision to close an internationally recognized health initiative, and the challenge of designing new approaches in the midst of ongoing crisis. These are not easy stories—but they are necessary ones.

Participants can expect a conversation that goes beyond polished narratives to explore:

  • The tension between staying the course and knowing when to pivot
  • What failure can teach us about long-term impact
  • How partnerships function when systems are weak or unpredictable
  • What it truly means to accompany communities over time

The session will also include interactive elements, creating opportunities to connect with others working in Haiti and across similarly complex environments.

At its core, this is not just a conversation about Haiti. It is a conversation about how we approach complexity everywhere.

For funders, practitioners, and leaders, the question is not whether the traditional playbook works—but what it takes to move beyond it.

If we are willing to listen, Haiti has much to teach. Register today.
