Marie-Claire shared her thoughts in the following message:
“I wanted to take a moment to reflect on this past weekend at the Ayiti Community Trust – 2024 Ayiti Visionaries Award and Fundraising event. It was a mix of emotions for me, and I was humbled to be recognized.
I’ve said it before, I don’t see myself as a visionary. Rather, I consider myself an executor of the vision that others before me had. Whether it’s Fr. Philippe Joseph and Anne Hastings with their vision for Fonkoze or my father’s lifelong mission to see a better Haiti through educating the next generation—it’s always been about carrying forward the dreams of those who paved the way.
Two golden rules my father ingrained in me guide my journey: “To whom much is given, much is expected,” and “Never miss an opportunity to plant a seed, even if you will not be the one to benefit from the harvest.” I’m committed to giving back and planting the seeds for a better Ayiti. I may not witness the full bloom, but my children or grandchildren will one day enjoy the fruits.
This recognition was especially meaningful because it came from my community and from an organization whose mission aligns with Fonkoze and my personal views. I felt immense pride to stand among fellow honorees who, to me, represent what it truly means to be Haitian and what we are capable of achieving, no matter the narrative others try to impose on us. I am hopeful because they are the doers, on the ground, working on the vision for a better Ayiti.
I accept this honor on behalf of the 50,000+ women Fonkoze serves each year, as well as the countless beneficiaries of our 30 years of impact. They are the true visionaries. Despite the hardships they face, they are unwavering in working toward a brighter future for their families, their communities, and for Ayiti.”
