Situation Update Haiti from Fonkoze

Update from Fonkoze in Haiti

March 13, 2024 | While recent headlines have once again brought attention to the challenging situation in Haiti, we want to share an update on how our dedicated Fonkoze teams are continuing their vital work in the face of increasing violence in Haiti.

The impact of recent events has been deeply felt, with gangs targeting public buildings, police stations, and businesses. Over 15,000 people have been displaced, seeking safety from the escalating violence. In many Port-au-Prince neighborhoods, essential services such as banks and shops remain closed, contributing to a palpable sense of unease. There has also been increase observed in gang presence in the Artibonite region.

Three of our colleagues in Port-au-Prince have had to leave their homes, finding refuge with friends and family. The rest of our Port-au-Prince team remains in their homes. Everyone is displaying remarkable resilience, adapting to remote work conditions and finding innovative ways to ensure our operations continue without disruption.

Programs Continue

Despite the disheartening news coverage, it is important to highlight that our programs in the rural areas outside of Port-au-Prince are persevering. Case managers are actively visiting CLM members in the four regions we serve, the Boujonnen Lavi team continues to organize nutrition trainings, and cholera kits are being distributed to those in need. Our Boutik Sante nurses are making the most of this period to catch up on reports and take well-deserved breaks.

We want to emphasize the remarkable resilience of our teams, who, despite facing adversity, remain committed to our mission. While we fervently hope for a swift resolution to the current challenges, we also acknowledge the uncertainty ahead. Your continued support is invaluable during these times, as it enables us to provide the necessary resources for our teams on the ground.

Together, we can navigate through these difficult times and continue making a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most.

Thank you to our supporters for standing with us.

Erlantz Hyppolite, Executive Director of Fonkoze USA

Fonkoze (The Foundation) was created 30 years ago to bring financial inclusion and development services to Haiti’s poor – providing them a viable way to lift themselves out of poverty. Today, we are a family of three organizations – Fonkoze Financial Services (SFF), Fonkoze Foundation and Fonkoze USA – that work together to empower Haitians, primarily women, to lift their families out of poverty.
