Fonkoze USA Executive Director Provides Guided Tour of Pittsburgh Haitian Art Exhibition: Haiti: Culture, Religion, and Revolution
“To understand what’s going on in Haiti today, you have to understand its history—and the best way to understand the culture is through its art.”
— Dr. Erlantz Hyppolite, Executive Director of Fonkoze USA
Erlantz Hyppolite guided guests in Pittsburgh, PA through the Haiti: Culture, Religion, and Revolution, an extraordinary Haitian art exhibition at the Latin American Cultural Center that offered a vibrant platform for Haitian artists to tell their own stories. Spanning four decades of creative expression, the collection explores powerful themes including the Haitian Revolution, climate disasters, political interventions, the role of religion, and the beauty of everyday life in Haiti.
This iconic exhibit features paintings, sequinned Vodou flags, metal works, and sculptures from artists across the country, with a special spotlight on the Artibonite region.
As part of this experience, Erlantz Hyppolite led a guided tour through the exhibit, offering cultural and historical insights that brought the art to life. Through his lens, visitors explored the meaning of konbit (collective work), lakou (communal living), the sacred Bois Caïman ceremony that sparked the Haitian Revolution, the creation of Haitian Creole as a language of resistance, and Vodou as a living spiritual tradition practiced by Haitians of all faiths.
This exhibit invites us to see Haiti not just as headlines, but as a nation with deep roots, vibrant traditions, and unshakable creativity. Support Fonkoze’s work by donating here.
